Top Ten Study Spots on Campus
Posted May 6th, 2010 by Richard SchmitCan’t find a quiet place to study outside the dorm room? Here are some spots to try.
10. L1, Nafus Center – This area has multiple tables, comfy couches and chairs with the charm of a cozy fireplace. If you can ignore the traffic of students and big screen TV, it may be an option for hitting the books.
9. Wilson Memorial Chapel – Located south of Sorkness, the open chapel has a beautiful view of the city of Jamestown, especially on a clear night. This secluded area is great for studying if you don’t mind sitting on the brick ground.
Death by water
Posted May 6th, 2010 by Richard SchmitHave you ever walked through campus fearing that at any moment you would be assassinated? Usually that would seem like a pretty unreasonable fear, but it’s a very real possibility during water elimination week.
Every year, the Student Senate runs this event. Water elimination is a game where you are assigned a target, and your job is to splash their front with water to eliminate them. Once you get your target out, you get your target’s target. After the game starts, the only place you’re safe is indoors. When you’re outside, you’re considered fair game.
What are you really paying for?
Posted May 6th, 2010 by Richard SchmitEveryone knows college isn’t cheap, though some schools, like Jamestown College, do a good job of helping students with scholarships and financial aid. There are also additional fees that come along with the college experience many people don’t think of.
First off, there are laundry fees. On campus it is $1 each for the washer and dryer. If you estimate doing two loads a month for nine months, that’s an extra $36 out of your pocket. Most students average two loads per week, so that adds up to $144 a year.
"Kick-Ass" does exactly that
Posted May 6th, 2010 by Richard SchmitA teenager becomes a superhero by a mutation, experiment gone wrong, or even by a spider bite. This is not the case for Dave Lizewski in 2010’s Kick-Ass. Dave, comic book geek and loner at his school, decides that he wants to become a super-hero of course lacking what it takes to be a super-hero. Garbed in a wet-suit he bought online, Dave becomes Kick-Ass. Without training and powers, Dave’s first outing leaves him in the hospital with several metal plates in his body and nerve damage. Still wanting to show he’s got what it takes he aids a man being beat up in a parking lot.
Rollie Greeno an unforgettable JC character
Posted April 20th, 2010 by Richard SchmitThe legendary North Dakota era faded April 6 when Rollie Greeno died. He started and finished his collegiate teaching and coaching career at Jamestown College.
“Most of the old North Dakota schools only had two or three football coaches and athletic directors for 50 to 60 years,” Jamestown College head football coach Bud Etzold said. “So those people were legendary.”
Greeno’s precedence with his players and at Jamestown College will never fade.
Bromances
Posted April 15th, 2010 by April BaumgartenBromance may have become a popular term in the past couple of years. However, it is something that is not new to history.
The term bromance was originally created by an editor for a skateboarding magazine in the early 90s. It was meant to describe two skaters who had become very good friends after spending a lot of time together. Now the term has seen recent commercialization mostly due to “I Love You, Man,” a movie that was released last year.
Happy Birthday, EPA
Posted April 15th, 2010 by April BaumgartenThe United States Environmental Protection Agency is something everyone is familiar with and has even been influenced by at some point in their lives, hopefully more often than not. It was formed April 22, 1970 by President Nixon and Congress in response to the rising demand for cleaner air, water and land. This year marks its 40th birthday.
Be proud to be a tree hugger
Posted April 15th, 2010 by April BaumgartenYou may have heard about our planet’s crappy situation, be it in the news, in school or even in “South Park.” Global warming, pollution and the extinction of natural life seem to be felt more then ever. Well, our planet will probably not pass away in 2012, but we need to care of it. Here is why:
Top 10 Greatest Books
Posted April 15th, 2010 by April Baumgarten#10—“Jurassic Park” by Michael Crichton: I’ll warn you ahead of time. This list is going to be more diverse than your standard top 10 “literary greats.” There’s more to “Jurassic Park” than meets the eye. In many ways, it is the “Frankenstein” of our generation. It’s about what happens when man messes with something he doesn’t understand. It’s about humankind deciding to leap before it looks. Also, it has some of the most pulse-pounding suspense sequences ever written.
Stop the attacks! Avoid computer meltdown
Posted April 15th, 2010 by April BaumgartenA student is sitting in front of the computer browsing the Web when a program pops up that says the computer is infected with viruses. Another student finds out that her information is being shared with scammers. Cyber attacks such as viruses and spyware are common while surfing the Web, but they are preventable.
A virus is a program that replicates itself into other programs which can cause computers to run incorrectly or lose memory. JC Help Desk Operator Chris Hoke said people usually get viruses from clicking on links or through peer-to-peer software.
