Alumna remembers former coach with scholarship

When Rob Luecke '82 died in December, 2007, at the young age of 47, one of his former athletes from Groton (S.D.) High School and fellow Jamestown College graduate Renee (Tastad) McDonald '94 wanted to honor his memory.

McDonald has set up the Rob Luecke Memorial Scholarship for a student of Groton High School to attend Jamestown College. She is collecting pledges on the number of miles she is running in preparation for the Brookings (S.D.) Marathon on May 10, with the goal of qualifying for the 2009 Boston Marathon.

"Rob was an amazing role model," says McDonald, who lives in Wheat Ridge, Colo. "He taught his athletes the art of discipline and dedication through structured support. He believed in his athletes and gave us the confidence to push a little harder to succeed."

Under coach Jim Clark, McDonald participated in cross country and track for the Jimmies. She was influenced by Luecke and his wife, Becky (Lundby) '84 to attend Jamestown College. She says a scholarship could really help a Groton High School graduate get the same great education.

"I work in education, specifically with students who are transitioning from high school to college," McDonald says. "I am constantly thinking about ways to reduce the barriers students face when accessing higher education."

McDonald says running is her way of relaxing.

"After a run, my head is clear and I am better able to focus my energy where needed," she says.
"The best part about running is that you can take it with you anywhere you go, and it can take you many places you may not otherwise go. For example, I have had the great fortune to explore many towns, cities, states, and countries while running. I can access the back streets and back roads not often traveled as a tourist. I am able to get a glimpse of the way of life for the people who live in that area."
