Two Jamestown College alumni have been selected to receive the Rollie Greeno Award for Outstanding Commitment in the Field of Education and Coaching.

Russ Werth, Bowman, N.D., and Dennis Gall, Watertown, S.D., will be recognized during Homecoming 2008 festivities.

Werth, a 1974 Jamestown College graduate, spent his entire teaching career in Bowman, first teaching drivers education and motorcycle safety from 1974 to 1986 and then teaching physical education and health from 1986 until his retirement in 2006. He also coached the Bowman Bulldogs wrestling team from 1974 to 1994.

At Jamestown College, Werth was an All-Conference lineman for the Jimmie football team, and he was a member of the 1971 Jimmie wrestling squad that was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.

Werth has been the recipient of numerous awards in his profession, including the North Dakota Exemplary Physical Education Program Award and the North Dakota Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award. He is a past president of the North Dakota Association for Health and Physical Education, and he was a torch bearer on the Billings, Mont., leg of the 2002 Winter Olympics Torch Run.

Gall, a 1974 graduate of Jamestown College, is a government teacher at Watertown High School. He has been at Watertown since 1985, and he previously taught and coached at Jamestown, Flasher, N.D., and Rolla, N.D. As a head coach, he compiled 256 victories which included seven district titles, four regional championships, and one state title with the Rolla girls basketball team in 1981. He was selected six different times as a district or regional Coach of the Year in North Dakota and South Dakota.

Gall's record as an assistant coach is also impressive with 11 state tournament appearances and one state title with the Watertown boys basketball team in 1999. He was voted the South Dakota Assistant Basketball Coach of the Year in 1999.

Gall has coached 16 All-State players, 58 All-Conference players, two Gatorade All-Americans, four Spirit of Su Award winners, four Mr./Miss Basketball finalists in South Dakota and one Miss Basketball in North Dakota.

The Athletic Hall of Fame Breakfast will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in Level Two of the Nafus Student Center. Tickets are $8 at the door.
